Yicheng Zhang

“Painting as a way of seeing the world.”

Yicheng Zhang (b. 1991, Kunming, China) is a visual artist living and working between Berlin and Beijing. He received his BFA from Tianjin Academy of Fine Arts in 2015. His practice centers on painting as a way of examining how perception constructs our understanding of the world. Rather than treating landscape as a fixed image or representation of a specific place, he uses it as an entry point into unstable and continually shifting visual structures. Through layers of paint, fluid acrylic, oil pastel, charcoal, and other materials, geological, organic, and imagined forms emerge, dissolve, and reconstruct one another. His ongoing Flowing Landscapes series explores painting not simply as image-making, but as a structure of seeing, where meaning remains open and is continuously formed through the act of observation.
